How to raise your freelance rate

Raising rates is a process, not a confrontation. Most friction comes from surprising clients — not from the number itself.

Raise for new leads first

Update proposals tomorrow. Existing retainers can follow on a 30–60 day notice. This protects cash flow while your floor moves up.

Anchor to value delivered

Mention outcomes: launches shipped, support load reduced, revenue influenced. Avoid “costs went up” as the only reason — true or not, it invites haggling.

A simple script

“Starting [date], new work is billed at $[rate]/hr. For our current retainer I’m holding the previous rate through [end date], then moving to the new structure. Happy to adjust scope if you want to keep the same monthly spend.”

Recalculate your floor with the freelance rate tool before you send that email.
